Jumbl;e raises £371 for cricket club
IT HAS been quite some time since Martinstown village hall hosted a jumble sale so it was a good move when the village cricket club opened the innings for 2008.
It was obvious from the piled up tables that many contributions had come from those who had succumbed to the irresistible urge to indulge in some early spring cleaning.
Indeed it was more 'new to you' than jumble.
The magnetic lure of possible bargains drew me into the hall where you needed to be blindfolded to bypass the steely persuasive gaze of John O'Brien manning the raffle stall.
Strangely enough the local folk seemed to be thin on the ground but it was lovely to see some old friends and ex-villagers manning the stalls.
It was a golden opportunity too for me to give my own personal thanks to Sue and Mike Clarke who had edited the Valley & Valence magazine for such a long time and had succeeded so well in capturing that essence of village life throughout the area.
I just could not believe I was hearing correctly when Mike told me that the total of £371 was raised for the MCC and asked me to pass on a very big thank you to all who helped by donating goods, manning stalls and of course spending their money so freely on the day.
I was asked to say that spectators are always most welcome to attend any matches on the field, which most know is situated along the road to Monkton against the backdrop of Maiden Castle.
I have received another request from Maggie Robertson to all those who struggled with THAT quiz.
The winner was Ron Matthews with 96 per cent. I struggled to achieve 86 per cent.
The main result was the fact it raised £100 towards helping Tom Addis climb Kilimanjaro in August 2008.
It really was most beneficial to those little grey cells but will they keep the information?
Cannot believe that the Easter season is so early this year but a sharp reminder came with the fact the customary Lent lunches started this week in the village hall.
Cost for soup and a ploughman's will be £3.50. All profits will go to a local charity.
To book a place ring Rosemary on 889466.
I always feel that it is a treat and not a penance especially for those who live alone.
Another heart warming aspect of community concern landed on my own doorstep the other day when my ESS Fern did a Houdini from my enclosed garden whilst I was busy making marmalade.
I whistled my search up the bridleway and round the footpaths with no result and eventually took myself off to the farm to see if she had flirtily succumbed to the charms of handsome black Labrador Echo.
No luck but Maggie tore herself away from that onerous task of coping with the farm paperwork and drove me around fields and tracks in search of my escapee.
Thankfully a word with Sue revealed the fact that Wendy, the Ark Animal Rescue had in fact collected Fern, who had ventured down into the village and that fast road ruining through it. All the tags and chips in the world would not have saved her, so it was only right that Fern donated some dog food to Wendy as a Thank You for all her good work on a shoe string.
Thanks are due too for the rest of the grapevine who passed info around - the Brewers Arms landlord who contacted Alan the shop and Wendy, who so quickly put a Found' notice in the shop.
As for Fern herself, she is quite unconcerned but it is my theory that she was standing on a vantage point of my compost heap when Charlie the Tibetan terrier went off in his owner's car and she took flight on the wings of love.
My thoughts are with the Mileating walkers who are in the Milton Abbas area, sadly an arthritic foot has prevented my participation plus I had already booked into the Valley View lunch club and it could well be pancakes too.
A SEEDSWAP will be held at the Brewers Arms this Sunday, February 10 from noon-2pm for part packets of seeds bring your own envelopes.
There could well be some new varieties.
