Rookery at the rectory expanding

AM I ALONE in noticing that the rook population is exploding into a much wider area and taking over trees that have never before hosted a nest let alone dozens of them?

Meanwhile in the long established rookery by Martinstown Rectory one nest has reached the depth equivalent of a high rise block of flats even though it is just occupied by a single family.

Even more interesting is the nest that quite literally coincided with Valentines day and looks most definitely heart-shaped, which no doubt says a lot for the social life of rooks.

  • THE Martinstown Mileaters roamed East Knighton and Winfrith Newburgh through meadows and heathland on their latest walk.

  • ANDY and Liz at the Coach and Horses in Winterborne Abbas have arranged a Locals' Lunch every Wednesday at 12.30pm Two courses for £5.95 per person on presentation of one of the tickets in the newsletter.

There is a choice between two options for the main and desert course and the 12 of us who enjoyed the most recent offerings were certainly well satisfied.

It is certainly up to all of us to support this sort of local enterprise.

  • I WAS very pleased to receive some news from Becky Dovey concerning that very lively pre-school group Jump Start.

It is hard to realise that it only opened in November 2007 for it became immediately so successful that it proved how much there was a demand for something to interest those pre-school children and of course keep parents in touch with each other.

There will be a "Childcare Information Session" from the Dorset Children's Information Service which will be held at the Jump Start meeting in the hall this Thursday, February 28.

Tessa Stevens and her colleagues will be available to meet members from 9.30-noon to provide up-to-date information on all aspects of childcare and working with childcare in Dorset.

Non members are most welcome to come along from 11.30am-noon.

Children under two classes from 9.30am-10.15am over two years 10.30am- 11.15am.

Further information from Becky Dovey tel 01305 889250 or Tessa Stevens Dorset CIS 0845 3552099.

  • FROM two feet to four feet Wendy has told me that there will be a Fun Dog Show on March 9.

This will be held in the village hall in the afternoon - all proceeds in aid of the hall annexe fund.

  • THE village hall was a scene of great activity this week with the digging of a large hole and erection of a high pole which means that the hall is now able to put on computer sessions for those who would like to avail themselves of this facility without need to go on line.

I gather that John and Graham will be there with expert knowledge to help those who lack the appropriate skills. Wonderful how so many folk turn up trumps in our community.

Well Brian B did when it looked as though we would lose our Valley magazine for the want of a co-ordinator. Just one little thing that is there no longer and which I for one greatly miss and that is the Index of events and features' which used to appear opposite the Vicar's page in the form of the Parish Diary which covered all villages and events.

If Brian reads his Echo community news maybe he will come to our aid and heed the appeal at least of this old wrinkly?
