Sequence dancers fly the flag
Patriotic sequence dancers enjoy special event
Patriotic sequence dancers enjoy special event

  • AS CAN be seen, there is no lack patriotic spirit or enthusiasm amongst the many members of the Sequence Dance Club which meets at the Village Hall. St George's Day was celebrated in fine style with a glass of bubbly and ploughman's supper provided by the Committee of the club, with, as you would expect, dancing to music provided by Terry and Betty Adair. A good time was had by all.

  • HAZEL from Preston has given me some information about the work going on at the reservoirs on the hill to the right above Coombe Valley road. As you will remember, a great deal of effort was expended last year in clearing and sealing the tops of the tanks. Now these have been emptied and are being relined with concrete, sealed and carefully cleaned prior to being refilled with water. The workmen are using climbing harnesses to swing themselves into the tanks and a safety man is always on duty above ground when the tanks are occupied. This was a pleasant enough job in the sunshine, but when the weather turned wet a small lean-to was created to keep the worst of the rain off him. Hazel, who walks her dogs over the hills, also tells me that she has seen adders about, and although they are still a little dopey from hibernation, she warns us to be careful where we tread when out in the countryside.

  • THE POLICE Community Van was at Overcombe Corner recently on the first of its three stops in the area. The other two were to be the Village Hall and Sutton Poyntz. PCSO 5325 Clive Joyner was in charge in the well equipped, comfortable and warm - welcome on a blustery day - van. He told me that there were not too many reported problems in the area, with the speed of traffic on the main Preston Road and congestion caused by inconsiderate parking by building contractors being two of the most mentioned. While we were there a lady dropped in to ask information on how to contact the police. It turned out that she had needed to do just this to report some anti-social behaviour by youngsters on the beach at Overcombe Corner. A call to a Police Station - she wasn't sure which office she had reached - was not very useful. No help was forthcoming except for a statement that the behaviour would be captured on CCTV. As there are no CCTV cameras in the location this demonstrated a lack of awareness on the part of the police operator. PCSO Joyner advised anyone wishing to contact a member of the local team should ask for them by number - PC 1358 Kevin Eames and PCSO 5319 Steph Weedon If they are not available a message will be left on their personal answering machine for immediate action when they return. He also promised to let me know in advance when the van would next be around so that I could pass on the information via this column.
