Autumn Fayre postponed for a week

10:31am Sunday 21st September 2008

  • MAUREEN Bond tells me that the autumn fayre, which was due to take place on 27 September, has had to be postponed for a week until Saturday, 4 October. It will still take place between 2pm and 4.30pm at the Scutt Hall, and all the proceeds will go towards the various scouting groups that use the Hall. Stalls will include plants, a special visit from The Body Shop, games, bric-a-brac and cream teas. This will be a great afternoon - all the better for having to wait a little longer for it - and the chance to really help our local youngsters. Make sure you put the new date of Saturday, 4 October for the autumn fayre in your diary.
  • ALAN Holiday of the Jurassic Coast Trust will be leading a walk from the Waterside Holiday Park in Bowleaze Cove on Saturday, 27 September to look at some of the geology of the coast in that area. I am sure that stout footwear and waterproofs in case of rain - we are bound to get a little bit this autumn! - will be necessary, so for further details, contact Alan on his email address alanholiday@btinternet.com.
  • JOY Winwood reports that at the September meeting of the Sutton Poyntz Women's Institute the speaker was Barbara Cohen, BWY Dip. Counsel, a practising Buddhist for forty years. Speaking in bare feet as a mark of respect in front of a small shrine of lit candles, she explained to the ladies that Buddhism is not a religion, but a strong moral code, and went on to explain the origins and beliefs. The ornament competition was won by Margaret Brown with her celadon angel, and Alison White won the regular flower of the month competition with her origanum. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, 1 October in the Mission Hall at 2.15pm, when the speaker will be Stuart Morris whose subject is Portland, then and now'.
  • WEYMOUTH & Portland Hospital's League of Friends is holding an arts and crafts exhibition in the Church Rooms on Saturday, 4 October between 10am and 4pm. In addition to the exhibits, which are sure to be worth seeing, as this area of Dorset has many talented folk, there will be craft stalls and the chance to partake of refreshments. Do drop in to see what is on show, and to help swell the funds of this worthwhile cause.
  • EMMA and Sarah King, who are well known to all regular customers at Joy's at Overcombe Corner, are taking part in Cancer Research "Run 10k" in Bournemouth on Sunday, 19 October. They are trying to raise £500 in sponsorship, and would be very grateful for any help you might be able to give them to achieve this. Sponsorship forms are available at Joy's - just ask any of the staff when you are next in there - or you can donate on-line at www.run10ksponsorme.org/emmaandsarah. Let's make it a very special day for Emma and Sarah, and for the Cancer Research charity, by getting over that £500.
