 | Coffee, cake and chat at the Mission Hall | | 12:34pm Mon 6 Oct 08 | | THE recent coffee morning in the Mission Hall was a resounding success. Over 30 people went along to enjoy freshly brewed coffee and a range of delicious home made cakes, and all for just £1.50. This was the first in what is going to be a regular series of such mornings, organized by the Sutton Poyntz Society, to be held on the first Friday in the month between 10am and 11.30am. The main aim is to bring people together for a chat in a convivial atmosphere, and that was certainly achieved on the inaugural meeting. |
 | You don’t have to spell toxophily to become an archer | | 7:11pm Sun 5 Oct 08 | | HAVE you ever thought of becoming a toxophilist? No? Well now's your chance, for Osmington Archers have a few vacancies for the coming autumn/winter season. This friendly group meet every Wednesday at Osmington Village Hall between 2pm and 4pm. Those with some experience of the sport of archery are welcome, as are complete newcomers, for all necessary equipment is available if you would like to give it a try. Tuition by appointment can also be provided on a Friday afternoon. So if you have ever thought of copying your ancestors who repelled the French hordes at the battle of Agincourt, or would just like some gentle exercise in a non-competitive environment, give Peter a ring on 833794 or drop in on a Wednesday to learn more. |
 | Popular local lady becomes a very Senior Citizen | | 9:18am Sat 4 Oct 08 | | IT WAS a very special birthday recently for one of Sutton Poyntz's most popular residents, and I am breaking no confidences when I tell you that Joyce Litschi has just reached her 90th year. The Litschi household was a busy place as family and friends came from all over the world for three days of celebrations. |
| Trick or treat? Neither, it’s a disco! | | 4:35pm Friday 3rd October 2008 | | THE Preston Mother and Toddler group are organising another of their very successful discos for youngsters of all ages, this time with a Halloween theme. It will take place on Friday, 31 October in the Scutt Hall between 4pm and 6pm. If you are interested you can obtain further details from Liz Perry on 833475 or by dropping in to the Mother and Toddler group on a Friday mornings between 10am and 11.30am at the Scutt Hall. Any profits from the disco will go towards toys for Group. Liz has asked me to say that the Group also caters for new mums and babies, because they have a special area that keeps the babies away from running toddlers, but they are still able to speak to the other people present without feeling separated from the Group. Sounds a great way to get out of the house and make some new friends. |
 | Nothing is amazing! | | 9:46am Thu 2 Oct 08 | | THIS is Bowleaze Coveway as you very rarely see it - not a parked car in sight! This was the sight that greeted me when I ventured up the Coveway recently to view the preparations for the Wind and Sails spectacular. The police had certainly set out to ensure that the roadway was kept clear, and must have used every cone for miles around to achieve this. |
| Senior Citizen Betty runs with style | | 11:54am Sunday 28th September 2008 | | The recent very successful Samaritans 7 Run brought the runners through Preston and along Oakbury Drive twice, much to my surprise! I went out to offer encouragement to the intrepid competitors from the comfort of a garden chair outside my house. Having seen what I thought was the last runner pass, I went back indoors, only, some while later, to see some of the same runners striding past on a second lap, so out I went with more words of encouragement. It was noticeable that the large police contingent, including local resident Nick Matin - well done to them for their support to the charity - were considerably more spread out the second time around! I was going to say they take no prisoners, but that probably isn't correct! |
| Mother and Toddler Group restarts | | 10:46am Monday 22nd September 2008 | | LIZ tells me that due to popular demand the Mother' and Toddler Group has restarted in the Scutt Hall. It takes place every Friday morning during school term time between 10am and 11.30am. The cost is £2 per session or £1 if child is under a year - perhaps not strictly toddlers at that age? I'm a bit out of touch on these matters! They are looking for new faces, and old ones that have yet to return, to join them. Everyone is welcome, because parents grandparents, and childminders all come under the word Mother'; perhaps Adult and Youngster Group would be a more accurate title? Why not drop in on a Friday, to see what they have to offer and enjoy the company of other adults with young children? They will be delighted to see you. |
| Autumn Fayre postponed for a week | | 10:31am Sunday 21st September 2008 | | MAUREEN Bond tells me that the autumn fayre, which was due to take place on 27 September, has had to be postponed for a week until Saturday, 4 October. It will still take place between 2pm and 4.30pm at the Scutt Hall, and all the proceeds will go towards the various scouting groups that use the Hall. Stalls will include plants, a special visit from The Body Shop, games, bric-a-brac and cream teas. This will be a great afternoon - all the better for having to wait a little longer for it - and the chance to really help our local youngsters. Make sure you put the new date of Saturday, 4 October for the autumn fayre in your diary. |
| Appeal for increase in static caravans at Bowleaze Cove | | 1:50pm Friday 19th September 2008 | | IN September 2007 the Waterside Holiday Group, operating on land adjacent to Bowleaze Cove, applied for planning permission for a change of use of some of their land from an existing touring caravan site to a site for 45 static holiday caravans, with the effect of increasing their total number of caravans to nearly 600. |
| The geese are on the wing | | 2:49pm Friday 12th September 2008 | | WITH weather such as we have just had, it is difficult to tell when summer has ended and autumn has begun, because with nothing but rain they blend together miserably. Luckily in Preston and Sutton Poyntz we always know when the seasons are turning by the flocks of geese that fly over us in great numbers, and they have certainly started now. Some while ago we had a number of opinions as to why the geese take to the air at this time of year, and where they are going when they do. |
