Geoffrey presents fascinating exhibition
 |
| GEOFFREY Poole produces a massive resource of recorded observations |
LOCAL resident Geoffrey Poole is a retired lecturer and a consultant geomorphologist.
He has recently presented a fascinating exhibition of photographs in Weymouth Library.
These were a small selection from the huge collection of interesting facets of life and sights in and around Weymouth and Portland over the last 50 years.
Geoffrey has a passion for putting on record aspects of every day work and recreation as experienced by ordinary people.
The exhibition highlighted some fundamental changes to our area and brought recent history into thought-provoking perspective.
It is a daunting task that is now being undertaken by Geoffrey to sort, categorise and edit the scores of thousands of photographs that he has collected during 50 years of personal observation and recording local scenes of social, historic and environmental significance.
The exhibition was seen by over twelve hundred people who were full of questions and feedback information.
The task now is to present this huge resource in accessible form including digital, and ultimately to provide a permanent home for the archive.
We are so fortunate to have such archives as Eric Ricketts' classic books on the buildings of Weymouth and Portland, Maureen Attwooll's popular compilations and now this huge geographical compilation which includes physical and human interpretation of our area.
RADIPOLE rector Ian Hobbs is to become Rural Dean next month.
In this role, he will represent parishes in Weymouth and Portland, whilst continuing as rector at St. Aldhelm's, Radipole.
He is preparing for the licensing ceremony that will take place during a special service at St. Aldhelm's Church on Thursday 17th April at 7.30 pm
MEMBERS of St. Aldhelm's Church Mothers Union are hosting an evening on drug awareness for women.
Starting at 8.00 pm on Wednesday 16th April, the aim is to provide an interactive setting, encourage informal discussion and share information.
This is an important subject on which many young people seem to be more informed than their parents!
ST JOHN'S School will be holding a special assembly on 8th April, the day after term resumes
Children, staff, parents and friends of the school will join in this special event to mark the beginning of Mrs. Diana Mason's headship.
Mrs Mason has been acting headteacher since the retirement of Mr. John Horrell last summer.
She was recently appointed to the permanent headship of the school, so the assembly will feature expressions of welcome and good wishes for the future.
LOUISE Lenihan is intending to participate in the Samaritans Charity Run later this year.
She is preparing to train for the event and would like to know if anyone would care to train with her.
All details can be found by clicking here.
Louise lives at 21, Roman Road, Weymouth, tel: 01305 781554 or 07743 731079.
She would love to have someone or lots of people to train with, in order to get in shape for the run and she will be enthusiastically raising funds for the Samaritans.
