  • ST MARY'S Middle School has become a specialist school for science and maths, and wanted to celebrate this in a very special way.

The school asked Andy Kirkby, a sculptor and teacher of art and design at several schools and colleges throughout Dorset, to design and construct a large sculpture that would stand on the lawns leading up to the front of the school Andy, who is also a parent at the school, came up with the idea of a sculpture based on science and astronomy.

A number of the students from the school helped with the ideas and construction.

This impressive and truly beautiful sculpture is also an automata, with a handle that can be used to revolve the inner design of the sun, moon and planets.

  • CHRISTINE Whitfield gives the following report for the scouts:

The new term has started and all sections are bulging!

This is extremely encouraging proving that scouting is as popular today as it has ever been.

If anyone has a child that would like to join beavers, cubs or scouts in the future, please contact the relevant section leader now to get on the waiting list.

Annual events are already being planned and include our bonfire night activities, community Christmas meal and carol singing around the village.

We would like to say a big thank you to the Williams Trust for is very generous donation that will enable us to buy replacements for our very old, worn out tents.

The search is now on to find a sponsor(s) to cover the costs of achievement badges and awards for our young people.

This could be done by a company, a group or individual and we can provide details of how the donation would be used.

Please contact Christine Whitfield on 01929 472159, in the first instance, for further information.

The scout group's Friday night bingo is a great fundraiser for the whole group and a real community night, too!

Bingo night starts at 8pm and future dates are: October 3, 17 and 31, and also November 14 and 28.

On December 12, there is a Christmas Special, starting at 7:30pm) Any enquiries please contact Bet Moss on 01929 471186.
