Sheila thanked for years as organist
Sheila Bellamy

A VERY large congregation turned out for the traditional Candlelight Carol Service at St Laurence Church and most particularly enjoyed the Dorset carols sung by the choir to the accompaniment of a small but very interesting orchestra.

One doesn't often get the chance to hear the hearty deep tones of the serpent along with cello, violin and clarinet.

The choir, conducted by Anne King of the Purbeck Gallery Choir, led the congregation in many of the old favourites, with our own Sheila Bellamy playing the organ.

At the end of the service choir member Chris Carter made a presentation of a painting of St Laurence's by Sally Pinhey to Sheila to thank her for the many years as organist and choir-mistress - she has certainly done a lot to raise the standard of music in this parish!

  • Now that Christmas has been and gone for nearly another 12 months, we're looking forward to 2008.

In Upwey, tradition has it that, on New Year's Day, the Nurdlers, maybe 20 or so, led by Albert the Tall, will sally forth from the Old Ship Inn armed to the teeth with grouting poles and dustbin lids (the old-fashioned kind) up the Old Roman Road to the Ridgeway, along the top and back to the pub - it's noisy, colourful and very unusual.

On January 1, they're setting off at 10.30am, Dorsetshire time - we'll leave that to your imagination - and they do enjoy a good crowd to cheer them on, It's an awfully good way of overcoming that certain feeling left over from the night's celebrations!

So we look forward to greeting 2008 in true Upwey style and wish everyone a very Happy New Year!
