Nurdlers provide great entertainment
THE New Year started with a hearty banging, clashing and shouts of 'Nurdle-Ho!' as our Nurdlers, led by Albert the Tall, set off on their expedition from the Old Ship to the top of the Ridgeway and over the hill cheered on by a goodly crowd on a brilliant sunny morning.
A motley crew of 20 or so they were, clad mainly in sacking and an assortment of odd garments in many colours, equipped with dustbin lids (to catch and ground the nurdle) and grouting poles to bat it about.
It was a little difficult, for those of us unversed in the rules, to discover exactly what was going on but it was a great entertainment provided one kept well out of the way.
Once the nurdlers have begun their assault on the hill there's no stopping them and the only safe place to be is taking refuge in the hedge or tucked up nicely in the pub!
Back down the Ridgeway they came, muddy, exhausted and exhilarated. Well done, the Nurdlers Ho! We'll let you know when they next meet. There is a website devoted to nurdling, find it through Google.
Back to sanity, many of us have resolved to embark on new and worthwhile activities this year.
At the Old School Village Hall, well known as an arts and crafts centre, there are a variety of courses on offer.
You might like to try your hand at pottery. In the well-equipped pottery room, Fil Cooke runs classes on Mondays from 7.30 to 9.30pm, beginning on January 14 until March 10,and Bill Crumbleholme does likewise on Tuesdays, also 7.30 to 9.30pm beginning on January 15 until March 11.

There are 10 sessions in each term for a fee of £50, - £10 deposit on booking and the balance payable at the first class. Incidental other costs will be 25p/lb for clay and £1/lb for the finished and glazed pots.
As these classes are very popular, it's as well to ring first to check availability.
Contact Fil on 812665 and Bill on 812030. Fil and Bill emphasise that these classes are privately run, they are not part of the County Education Service and therefore there are absolutely no assessments, certificates or bureaucracy and everyone, from complete beginners to the experienced, is encouraged to progress at their own speed and according to their own choice.
This year, Bill is introducing Pottery Days, Sundays January 13 and 27, February 17 and March 2. These will be all-day sessions beginning at 10am and finishing at 5.30pm.
During the day, participants will be introduced to some of the skills as demonstrated by Bill and then have the opportunity to try for themselves throwing on a wheel, hand building and firing a raku pot. The cost of this will be £35 to include coffee and biscuits and all the materials.
Ring Bill on 01305 812030 for further information or email him on bill@upweypotters.com. There is also a website, visit www.upweypotters.com.
For the musically inclined, Sue Pykett runs the Upwey Recorder Group on Mondays at 7pm.
The sessions are very relaxed and all comers are welcome. Just turn up at the Old School.
Relax and relieve stress and improve your body at the same time with Yoga. Barbara Cohen runs a class on Thursday mornings, again at the Old School, from 10am to 11.30am, costing £5 a session, and there are some places available, bring your own mat if you've got one. Ring her on 786821.
Lastly, to get your brain up and running again, FOSNASLS - Friends of St. Nicholas and St.Laurence School - are holding a Fun Quiz, with answerable questions, at the school on Friday, January 18 at 7.30pm.
Tickets are £3.50 to include supper, but bring your own drinks, alcoholic or otherwise; there's to be a small raffle and any prize contributions are welcome. Jo Corben on 815968 is the person to contact.
