Women in agriculture talk proves fascinating
AT THEIR first meeting of the new year, Upwey and Broadwey WI welcomed a new member and made plans for the spring. There's quite a lot going on.
The speaker at this first meeting was Mrs. Buckler Gale, whose subject was Women in Agriculture, illustrated with slides covering mediaeval times, the land girls of the First World War and then to today's agricultural students.
The WI meets on the second Thursday of every month at 2.30pm in the Memorial Hall, and also runs a whist drive on the last Monday.
The speaker at the next meeting is Mr Cowling, who will talk about the plants on Portland which have special significance for health.
If you are interested in joining the WI do contact secretary Peggy Riglar on 01305 812160.
Upwey Old School Village Hall Film Nights are about to begin again. The first film to be shown this year is Atonement, a very highly-acclaimed film of the book by Iain McEwan. The showing is on Thursday, January 31 at 7.30pm. The bar opens at 6.30 and you should take your seats by 7.15. The cost is £5.00 per person, regrets no food this time.
Then next month they're showing the film Elizabeth: the Golden Years on Thursday, February 28.

The Upwey and Broadwey Horticultural Society will soon be putting on its wellies again and sharpening up its tools in readiness for the spring.
The first meeting of the year will be held at St. Nicholas and St. Laurence School on Thursday, February 7 at 7.30pm. Rob Curtiss has been invited to speak at this meeting and his subject will be Dorset Curiosities - sounds intriguing.
Many gardeners will be thinking about their exhibits and contributions for the Spring Show which will be held on Saturday, March 15, at 2pm in the Memorial Hall.
Anyone interested in joining this very lively and successful society should contact Graham Brant on 01305 812276.
Last September the appeal for the restoration of the windows of St Laurence Church was launched and there has been a very heart-warming response. There's still a very long way to go, and the committee has been busy planning a variety of events which it is hoped will attract lots of people and swell the funds!
To find out more about St. Laurence's. its services, its people, its history and architecture, call in at the church, which is always open during the day often with Chris there to point out the interesting features and tell its stories.
Or you can visit the appeal website at www.stlaurenceupwey.org
