Tea party raises £400 for windows

THERE was a lovely tea party in the Old School last week, held in aid of the St Laurence Church Windows Appeal.

Lots of people sat down to a truly splendid spread of all the traditional tea time favourites, chose goodies from the sales tables and participated in the raffle.

The astonishing sum of over £400 was raised for the appeal.

Congratulations to Rita and Jane for all their efforts.

  • THE Old School Village Hall held its AGM last week.

Chairman Bill Crumbleholme gave a summary of the year's work and activities and thanked the committee for all their support.

Treasurer Phil Price assured us that the finances were in good order and Fil Cooke asked especially if anyone would care to take over the job of publicity for the various events and exhibitions. He would greatly appreciate some help in this area.

Di Pattinson reported on the success of the 100+ Club which made over £800 last year and invited members old and new to invest again this year. Contact her on 813539.

After the meeting closed and everyone was suitably refreshed at the bar, Bill introduced Connecting Dorset, whereby village halls are invited to install computer equipment for use by the general public under the eye of mentors.

There was some discussion as to exactly how and when this is to be used, the costs involved, and how the scheme will be monitored.

There is also a proposal to establish a closed group for use in the village to exchange information. Perhaps this has a little way to go.

  • THE Upwey and Broadwey Horticultural Society enjoyed a very successful meeting when more than 40 people heard a talk by Chris Ireland-Jones, on summer flowering bulbs.

This Saturday, March 15 is the society's spring show. Always popular, members and many others exhibit plants and flowers, especially daffodils, and enjoy exchanges of views and information. The Show is held at the Memorial Hall at 2pm, and there will be refreshments.

Looking forward, the society will be celebrating its 130th anniversary in some style. They will be hosting the BBC Gardeners' Question Time on Monday, June 9 at the St. Francis of Assisi Church hall on Littlemoor Road.

Tickets for this exciting event, for which the society has waited a very long time, will not be on sale before the end of April, but we'll keep you informed.

On a final note, congratulations to Sue Brant for winning the Mary Middlemass Trophy 2007, for plant and flower of the month.

  • ON GOOD Friday, March 21 at 7.00pm there will be a devotional service with anthems, readings and congregational hymns at St. Laurence Church.

Our organist, Sheila Bellamy, arranges the music and augments our choir with singers from other parishes. We welcome everyone to share in this special service.
