Change of chairman for society
IN THIS season of AGMs, the latest one was that of the Upwey Society, attended by some 40 members lured by the promise of nice wine and nibbles on a lousy night.
Once all the reports had been given, the meeting moved on to the election of officers for the coming year.
Pru Bollam has been chairman for three years, having agreed initially to occupy the hot seat for only one year, but now she has decided to stand down.
The president, Angela Lousley, thanked her for all her efforts to ensure the smooth running of the society, for her organisational skills and her ability to include everyone in the various activities, she'll be a hard act to follow.
I have been elected to succeed Pru as chairman, and John Ramsden will take over the all-important position as secretary from Jim Wilkinson.
THE South Dorset Woodcarving Group will be exhibiting their beautiful work at the Old School Village Hall, next to the Wishing Well, from Good Friday until Wednesday, March 26 as part of the exhibition and sale of art, pottery and local crafts.
The group meets fortnightly at the hall from 7pm-10pm and welcomes new members - experienced or enthusiastic beginners and anyone else.
There is a small selection of tools available to get you started and suitable wood. The next meeting is on Tuesday, March 18. Contact Robbie Way on 813538 for further information.
ALSO over the Bank Holiday, there's a splendid exhibition and sale at the Monkton Gallery, running from Good Friday, March 21 to Monday March 24, between 10.30am and 5pm. There is great excitement among the organisers as they engage new artists.
Did you ever own, or dream of owning a proper rocking horse?
Liz Mangles has been making rocking horses for the last five years in lively, but traditional style, finished with excellent paintwork, superb saddlery and horsehair manes and tails and she will be exhibiting her work at the Gallery.
Another newcomer to the Monkton Gallery is Penny Cole and her work is with fabrics she weaves and dyes, using only the finest natural yarns and fibres - cashmere, angora, alpaca, linen, cotton, silk. Add vibrant colour and her profound artistic flair to produce scarves and wraps and you'll find something very special.
Returning to the Monkton Gallery is Jon Ellis, who will be displaying his latest water feature and tempting you as spring approaches and new garden ideas come to mind.
There's an immense amount of talent in Upwey and its immediate area, do try to find time to come and see the work on display at the Old School Village Hall and the Monkton Gallery.
A LITTLE appropriate music will not come amiss at this special season.
In St Laurence Church on Good Friday evening at 7pm there will be a devotional service with anthems sung by an augmented choir and congregational hymns, under the baton of organist and choirmistress, Sheila Bellamy.
Happy Easter, everyone.
