Churchwardens reappointed

AT THE recent annual parochial meeting of St Laurence Church, Pru Bollam and Paul Sutcliffe were again appointed as churchwardens and the various other duties and responsibilities were shared amongst members of the congregation.

As far as caring for the fabric of the church goes, the year has been taken up with preparations for the great work of restoring the windows.

After a very well-attended launch in September, the appeal fund now stands nearly at the half way mark, thanks to the generosity of so many friends, and Jon Callan, a local glazing craftsman has been appointed to undertake the work.

It is hoped that work will begin in September and will be completed within 12 months.

There is still a need for considerably more money and there are lots of events planned to which we hope many of you will come.

For more information on this very exciting project, visit our website www.saintlaurenceupwey.org where you will find posted, and regularly updated, a list of the events that are coming up and the progress of the appeal.

  • THE Upwey and Broadwey WI were entertained at their last meeting by Sheila Bird, who told the stories of Dorset buttons and something of the lives of the people who made them.

Their next meeting, on Thursday, April 10 at 2.30pm, at the Memorial Hall in Victoria Avenue will be the AGM.

Visitors are invited to attend but, of course, will not have the right to vote on any of the proposals put forward, but they will surely enjoy the social time when members will be expressing their lively imaginations with puds and poems.

  • THE Old School Village Hall begins its season of exciting exhibitions this Saturday and Sunday, when Nicola Cooke will be showing her work.

  • CONGRATULATIONS to Wendy Spalding, who has been crowned the Upwey and Broadwey Slimming World group's Greatest Loser!

She's lost 2,1/2 stone since October when she joined the group and must be feeling very pleased with herself. For more information, contact Sue Glenn on 01305 822162.

  • CONGRATULATIONS also to Sue Virgin - she's the one who sets up the brilliant local history exhibitions at the Memorial Hall which we all so much enjoy - on being appointed senior road safety officer for the county.
