Exciting exhibition enhanced by concert
THERE was a very exciting exhibition of new work by Nicola Cooke at the Old School Village Hall last weekend.
Like her husband, Justin, Nicola finds inspiration in light and shade and has based much of her work on trees creating some lovely pictures.
To make a visit to the exhibition even more enjoyable, those who called in on Sunday afternoon were treated to a delightful concert.
Claire Nuttall and some of her friends have formed a group and sing unaccompanied a selection of modern and folk songs.
The Ladies of the Lawn, as they call their group, began life one afternoon last summer and now feel ready to set out on the road to entertain.
Congratulations to Charlotte, Melanie, Laura, Morven and Claire on their first outing - we'll surely hear more of them! Contact Claire on 816352.
FOR a complete change of mood, we'll turn to the subject of mole-catching.
Those irritating dark diggers can make the most frightful mess of one's nice lawn, but help is at hand in the shape of Bob Blyth whose hobby it is to sort out the problem.
He also has some very good advice on dealing with unwelcome, often dangerous, rats.

IT'S VERY nearly well-dressing time again.
Every year, for the early May bank holiday, Maggie Cooke and friends design splendid panels depicting some special theme, maybe something of current interest or mythological or connected with local history.
The panels are carefully prepared with clay as a base onto which the design is pricked out and then the pictures completed with plant materials of many sorts - leaves, petals, seeds, bark and anything else natural that is available.
The panels are then ceremoniously placed in the arches of the well at the great springs and remain for all to see and enjoy for several weeks.
This year's theme is still a secret at the moment, but without doubt, the work will be finished on time for placing at around midday on Saturday, May 3, but many helpers are needed.
You are invited to come to the Old School Village Hall from Wednesday April 30 when the work starts, through Thursday and Friday and take a little time at this most satisfying and gentle activity.
At the Old School, once the well-dressing has been placed at the well, the hall will become the venue for a taster exhibition of the work which Weymouth and Portland artists will be showing at Dorset Art Weeks at the end of May and beginning of June.
It's a wonderful opportunity to whet the appetite for what is to come later in the month.
The official guides for Dorset Art Weeks are available now at the Wishing Well and many local outlets and provide in themselves a feast of anticipation!
