There'll always be an England
"LAND of hope and glory!" went up the sound of nearly 70 people at a brilliant St. George's day supper at the Old School Village Hall on April 23rd.
Gwen Nayler and her army of foot soldiers prepared, served and cleared a superb dinner of truly English fare, better by far, no doubt, than would have been enjoyed by King Henry V's gallant men as they fought for England's glory at Agincourt in 1415.
Throughout the evening, with songs recalling Vera Lynn, Edward Elgar and other greats, a quiz to challenge our national knowledge and some funny stories well-told, the time passed all too fast.
And to keep us on our toes, or some anyway, Nick Painting first demonstrated his juggling skills and then invited us to have a go. Up went, Ken Shaw who proved he could spin plates, Phil Price, Anne Prendergast and Helen Goodman who all tried gamely to manage more than one ball at a time without dropping the lot and the rest of us applauded their efforts.
The event was held to raise funds for the St. Laurence Church windows appeal which benefited to the tune of £1000.
Well done, Gwen, and thank you for a splendid effort!
ON Saturday May 10, at the Old School Village Hall, there will be a plant sale, together with cakes and delicious homemade preserves. And there will be the usual very well-stocked bric-a-brac stall.
Run by St. Laurence Church, this is always a popular event and there will be coffee and Jackie Johnson's yummy bacon butties to sustain you.
Doors open at 10.00am and we look forward to seeing you there.
ALSO on Saturday May 10, the Upwey and Broadwey Horticultural Society are holding their Plant Sale, with a cake stall as well, at the Memorial Hall.
This one opens at 2.00pm until 4.00, and tea or coffee and biscuits are available.
The Horticultural Society is gearing up for their big event on Monday June 9 when BBC Gardeners Question Time will be their guests at St. Francis Church in Littlemoor.
Tickets for this are not yet available, but they will cost £2.50 each and if you are interested, you should send a cheque made out to BUDHS (Broadwey Upwey and District Horticultural Society) for the right money and enclose a stamped addressed envelope to Sue Brant at 7, Stonechat Close, Bincombe, DT3 5SE.
Of course, members of the society will have first pick, but there's space for lots of people.
