Drama group visit school

A SMALL Christian drama group called Slingshot have been doing the rounds of Weymouth schools this week as part of local churches' annual Spring into Life initiative to convey a message of hope to the young people in our town.

They visited Wyke Regis School to present their play about the Bible character Joseph and his special colourful coat, and were very well received, with hearty laughter at appropriate points, especially when the Ishmaelite traders arrived on the scene.

All I can say is it's amazing how much can be conveyed with very simple props including long-handled multi-coloured dishmops posing as some of Joseph's brothers!

This talented young team from the Saltmine Trust travel all over the country.

They commented on the great response from the children here in Weymouth and Portland, saying what good audiences they have been.

Local children have told me how much they enjoyed the presentation. Teams from various local churches from different denominations have also been visiting the schools including those in Wyke and Lanehouse area to help take lessons and assemblies on the theme of hopes and dreams. Local youth workers and band The Repercussion have been involved too.

  • EASTER is rapidly approaching.

Traditional hot cross buns will be served at the monthly coffee morning at Lanehouse Methodist Church, Lynch Lane, on Tuesday, March 18, from 10am, with books and raffle to help raise money for church funds. Everyone welcome.

HARVEY, a two foot high chocolate Easter rabbit from Dorchester Chocolates, has taken up temporary residence at Alf's Fish and Chip Shop, Fiveways, and is looking for a new home.

So come on all you chocaholics, dig deep in your pockets and come and support this latest fundraising initiative to help finance a three-hour mystery tour in April for local pensioners, followed by dinner courtesy of John and Karen Pearce and supporters.

Raffle tickets are available from Alf's, priced 50p per ticket or three for £1, the grand prize being mouthwatering Harvey.

John is also collecting good quality bric-a-brac and books etc for a table top sale to be held in the second week of next month to help swell funds for this summer's programme of outings and treats for local elderly folk.

Donations of items in good saleable condition are invited please.

  • FOLLOWING a very successful year of selling home made produce, members of Wyke Producers Market are now geared up for Easter. Every Friday leading up to Easter they have had a good selection of cards and gifts for all the family on display, available at reasonable prices to suit all pockets.

Also available are gorgeous cakes and savouries, jams, marmalades, pickles and chutneys, all home made to tempt the discerning palate.

Plants and vegetables are for sale when in season. Fresh eggs are also on sale, for children to paint as Easter gifts for their mums, dads, and grandparents maybe?

Tea and coffee is served at 30p per cup at the tables so you can pause to enjoy a chat with old friends or even make new ones.

The market is held in the WI Hall in Gallwey Road, Wyke Regis from 8.45am until 10.45am every Friday, except Good Friday.
