Society to protect town green is reformed
Gill Taylor and Sue Liddell

THE meeting held to reconvene the Society for the Protection of Markham and Little Francis was well attended, with just over 70 people present.

There was just enough space to squeeze everyone in.

Gill Taylor, who was recently elected chairman of the Westham PACT Group, chaired this opening meeting.

She began by introducing herself, Councillor Mike Byatt, veteran campaigner Joan Horne and co-convener of the meeting, Sue Liddell, and stating the purpose of the meeting.

She gave a potted history of the long-term efforts by local people over many years to ensure this area of open space remained freely accessible to the public.

A display board at the front of the hall clearly showed the exact area that was registered as Town Green in 2001, approximately one third of the total area known locally as Curtis fields which is now owned by Betterment Properties.

Councillor Mike Byatt explained what had been happening recently with regard to Betterment's challenge in High Court to the Town Green and the ongoing legal procedures in which the county council is presently engaged as the registering authority.

The purpose of the reconvened Society for the Protection of Markham and Little Francis was defined as being to continue to represent the opinions and wishes of the community during this process.

The society will also seek to keep local people informed so those who wish to be involved as and when appropriate will know whom to contact in order to volunteer and find out what they can do to help.

A committee comprising of chairman, two secretaries, treasurer and three other willing volunteers was duly elected and will meet as soon as possible to draw up a new constitution for the reconvened society.

For further information, to express your support or your willingness to help please contact Gill Taylor, the newly elected chairman of Markham and Little Francis Protection Society on 01305 779936 or email her at gtmorgan100@hotmail.com

  • THE winning raffle tickets in the Easter raffle, the first prize for which is a very large chocolate rabbit locally produced in Dorchester and sporting the name of Harvey, will be drawn by yours truly at Alfs Fish and Chip Shop, Fiveways, Westham, on Easter Saturday, March 22 at 1pm.

All money raised will go towards funding summer outings for elderly local residents who find it hard to get out and about under their own steam and would otherwise miss out on enjoying the lovely countryside that surrounds our town.

MY FELLOW community correspondent Erika Patterson recently went to an exercise class in Wyke and enjoyed it so much she asked me to give it a mention here.

She said: "It is really good fun and I felt I could work at my own pace whilst learning a bit of dance."

The Latino/Salsa Dance Aerobics Class is held at Wyke Memorial Hall on Thursdays from 9.30am and on Fridays at the Squash Club from 9.30am, both during term time only.

Contact Debbie Tizard on 01305 750562 to find out more.
