  • MEMBERS of Wyke Sisterhood were delighted to be treated to a free fish and chip lunch on Wednesday, June 25, courtesy of John and Karen Pearce of Alfs Fish and Chip shop at Fiveways.

They were also hoping to go on a mystery tour but sadly no coach was available on the day.

Instead, they have now been promised a winter outing to Street to do their Christmas shopping.

The sisterhood's last meeting before the summer break was held at Wyke Methodist church on Tuesday, July 1 with the Avalon choir as their guest entertainment. The group's weekly meetings, to which women of any age and denomination are welcome, will now close for the summer and resume on Tuesday, September 16 at 2.30pm.

  • JOHN and Karen Pearce have organised five outings so far this summer and over 200 local pensioners have benefited from their generosity in organising these.

The couple also hope to run two Christmas shopping trips to Street in the autumn.

On Wednesday July 16, which also happens to be John's birthday, they will celebrate their third anniversary at Alfs Fish and Chip shop.

To mark this occasion and also help raise money for the forthcoming coach trips they intend to set aside 10% of the day's takings on Thursday, July 10 for their community fund. Donations or ideas for fund raising events to help continue running these community trips are always welcome.

Just call in at the shop at Fiveways and have a chat with John and Karen.

  • DORSET Arts Week was another triumph for local photographer artist Roger Smith. Over 40 people visited his exhibition on the opening day.

The green is accessed by public footpath from the end of Markham Avenue, which is the turning south off Chickerell Road directly opposite Fielding and Cumber's Weymouth veterinary surgery. Roadside parking is limited so walk or cycle to the site if you can.

Why not bring a picnic and come and enjoy this lovely green open space which the society are campaigning to save.
