All the fun of the grow-your-own fair

8:29pm Thursday 31st July 2008

  • Members of Wyke Regis Horticultural Society are staging a free entry open day on Sunday, August 17 from 10am to 4pm in association with neighbouring Weymouth South Scouts and Leigh House care home in Rylands Lane.

You are invited to join them for a fun-filled and interesting day for all the family.

There will be opportunities to taste and buy fresh produce from Wyke Allotment holders, find out how to grow your own organic vegetables, bring and buy plants and enjoy refreshments.

There will be home made cakes and a gardeners white elephant stall.

Prizes and certificates will be awarded in a children's competition for the best scarecrow made on site or the best animal shaped vegetable, courtesy of the Beaver Scout group. Youngsters will also be able to make grass heads' to take home and watch grow.

Leigh House gardens will be open to the public with a tombola to try plus refreshments and a selection of home made preserves and honey to sample.

  • The committee members of the Protection Society for Markham and Little Francis report they have now raised enough money to enable them to register as a charity.

If the committee decides to proceed with this it will enable tax payers to gift aid their donations.

Forthcoming fund raising events include a street collection to take place in town on Saturday September 13.

A sponsored walk round the town green is planned for the end of September.

Sue's nursery rhyme quiz is still available at £1 per copy and could prove to be an invaluable way to keep the children entertained on a wet day or a long journey.

The competition closes at the end of the month. Telephone 01305 767819 for further information.

There is still a large sum of money left to be raised in a limited amount of time so the committee welcomes ideas and help with doing this.

Contact Sue on the number above or Gill on 01305 779936 if you can organise or help with an event or can offer any creative but practical suggestions for other ways to help the society meet its target total.

Meanwhile a natural history survey of the green is presently being conducted.
