YOUNGSTERS showed off their language skills at Chickerell Primary Academy.

Pupils from Year Six made the most of Language Detective Day, where they spent time learning clues to discover more about how different languages function.

A total of five schools took part including the Isle of Portland Aldridge Community Academy (IPACA), Conifers Primary School, St Nicholas and St Laurence Primary and Wyke Regis Junior School.

Activities included language games, wordplay and speaking participation.

Year Six teacher Sarah Mortimer, of Chickerell Primary Academy, said the day provided a great opportunity for Chickerell pupils to work with youngsters from other schools.

She added: “The children were placed into new teams with a mix of pupils from each school. “Activities involved language games, wordplay and oral participation. “Each of the children involved were very much creative and imaginative thinkers, able to interact with others as well as work independently and all enjoyed the challenges presented.”

The day was organised by modern language teachers Karen Parnell and Tracey Jones.

Ms Jones, of Budmouth College, said: “I was really impressed with how the students from different schools worked together to think about languages and solve linguistic puzzles. “They were brilliant language detectives.”
