YOUNGSTERS from a Weymouth school had a tour of the Dorset Echo office.

The Year Four class from St Augustine’s was invited into the office on the Granby Industrial Estate to find out more about how newspapers are put together.

Teacher Catherine Tonkin said the visit came ahead of plans to set up their own school publication. She said: “We have been looking at newspapers and magazines as part of our literacy studies, and it’s something they really enjoyed.

“They had some fantastic questions and it was a great experience for them to see how many different roles there are, and how many jobs it creates for the local area.”

She added: “Hopefully it will inspire them to want to set up their own newspaper.”

The children spoke to people who work in the editorial and advertising departments as well as finding out more about the print centre.

A special front page to highlight their visit was designed and printed to show how newspapers are put together.

Jack Street, aged nine, said he really enjoyed the visit.

He added: “We had talks from lots of different people and then got to ask questions. My favourite bit was learning about what the managers do. It was really good.”
