STUDENTS spent the day learning about life during the First World War.
Wey Valley School students commemorating the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of war.
The whole school took part in an assembly with a guest speaker from the Royal British Legion telling of the sacrifices of young people in the war.
Head of history Charlotte Guest said: “We felt it was important to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the war and show how all aspects of life were affected.
“It was a great day of activities. Weymouth played an important part in the war, especially when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps arrived to be based here in 1915.”
The English department saw pupils drafting letters to an unknown soldier, with a corridor decorated with bunting and playing period music.
In maths students looked at currency conversions for the European currencies of the period.
The PE department staged a re-enactment of the famous Christmas truce football match between German and British soldiers, while in drama trench building was carried out as a role play.
Meanwhile, the dance and music departments staged singing and marching events in the dance hall and the modern foreign language department looked at propaganda.
