A NEW printer is inspiring the next generation of designers and engineers at Chickerell.
Pupils at Budmouth College have been using a new 3D printer ‘MakerBot’ as an experimental modelling tool.
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers funded the new printer, which can print 3D designs of any shape and is only limited by size.
Head of Design and Technology, Tony Walker, said: “For our A-level students it is an exciting development. Over the next year we want to see inventive uses by our students of this new technology.
“We know they are using 3D printing in the food and textile industries so we also want our food and textile students to experiment with this technology over the next few years.”
The college is also considering using the equipment within the Art department to model some of the students’ sculptural ideas.
Nick Schulkins, chairman of the Wessex Region of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers said: “The institution is absolutely delighted to present this 3D printer to Budmouth College. The equipment has already made a difference to product design and engineering courses at the college.”
