WEYMOUTH students have been identified as potential skiing champions.

Two teenage super-skiers from Wey Valley School have been identified by instructors at the Italian ski resort of La Thuile as potential champion racers and instructors of the future.

Harvey Davies and Kai Luke, both aged 13, returned triumphant from the Aosta Valley in north-west Italy, where they joined 40 other students and staff for the academy’s annual ski trip.

Mark Salmon, organiser and head of PE, said: “The students were outstanding on the trip and made swift progress high on the mountain on blue and red runs.

“The top group even managed to be the first group on the black run when it opened for a short time.”

“All of the professional instructors commented on how pleased they were with the progress and enthusiasm of all our students.”

Over the last decade more than 600 Wey Valley students have taken part in the school’s annual ski trip, enjoying the slopes in a variety of European locations. Phil Thomas, Wey Valley principal, said: “These school trips provide a natural overlap with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, which is a particular strength of our outdoor education curriculum programme. They are always very popular.”

Kai and Harvey are both in year 9 at Wey Valley School.

Harvey said: “The off-piste skiing with the jumps was really exciting and the red ski runs were a good challenge for the group.”

Kai said: “We were also able to do ice-skating in the evening at the Olympic rink that will host this year’s European Champion-ship – that was fantastic too.”
