WEYMOUTH youngsters have been learning how to give something back.
The pupils at Beechcroft St Paul’s CE Primary School have danced their socks off for shoppers and styled their hair to raise money for terminally ill patients.
The school charity drive began with a group of 12 Year Five pupils learning the art of Morris Dancing and performing for shoppers in town as part of the Dinosaurs Not Allowed London 2012 Cultural Olympiad project.
The pupils had been honing their skills in the traditional art since they were in Year Four.
Pupil Max Patrick said: “We moved to lots of different places in town and asked shoppers if they wanted to join in.”
Teaching assistant Mandy Powell helped the pupils to practice.
She said: “They worked very hard at it and really got into the swing of things.”
As a reward for their efforts, pupils were treated to a limousine ride with Weymouth chauffeur service Travelling in Style.
They were whisked away VIP style to Cineworld in Weymouth where they watched the film ‘Yogi Bear’.
Year Five pupil Mahbe Ahmed said: “It was an awesome experience.
“We had really cool music playing. The seats in the back were really slippery.”
All of the school’s students livened up lessons by taking part in a Wacky Hair for Hospicecare day.
Creative hairdos included cobweb and plastic spider designs, rainbow-coloured locks and Mohican wigs.
The school raised around £200 for the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust by paying £1 or more to take part.
Headteacher Sarah Sprague said: “This is typical of Beechcroft’s approach to learning through fun.
“It’s a delight seeing children do things for others and making a difference to others in a positive way.
“I did an assembly and said how proud I was of the children who came in with extra pennies on top of the pounds and realised how important the charity is.
“They wanted to do extra to help."
