THERE was a pooling of resources when Frome Valley School at Crossways teamed up with one of Dorset’s leading tourist attractions for its Science Week.

Members of the Reception Class at the school near Dorchester spent a day getting up close and personal with the inhabitants of a shoreline rock pool – in their assembly hall.

The pool and its crabs and starfish were provided by Weymouth’s Sea Life Centre, which regularly visits local primary schools as part of its outreach work.

Sea Life Centre rock pool expert Sarah Lawrence said: “We often do this. We go out to schools and give a talk on rock pools and let the children see and gently touch the starfish and other creatures.

“The children love it and are very interested in what we show them. We did it last year and several schools asked us to go back this year.”

The pupils all crowded round Sarah and the pool and were fascinated by what they saw. Some of the braver ones even put out their hands to touch the crabs’ shells.

Teacher Tracey Piddock said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn something new about creatures they might find on the seashore.

“They had the opportunity to handle crabs and starfish, learning about habitats and how they survive in the wild.”
