| SOUNDS GOOD: Monique Belle who is studying for a foundation degree in music technology at Weymouth College |
AN OPEN day is being held at Weymouth College on February 29 about higher education and foundation degrees.
The event is being held at the campus in Cranford Avenue from 1pm to 4pm.
Information will be on offer about foundation degrees and degree programmes that the college has built up in affiliation with universities in the South West.
Student Monique Belle, who is taking a foundation degree in music technology, said: "I chose to study for my degree course at my college as the course had a very good reputation.
"I love the course, particularly the live recording lessons.
"The facilities are excellent and all the lecturers have been very supportive.
"I would recommend studying for a foundation degree to anyone with an interest in music."
A foundation degree is a higher education qualification which combines study with work experience.
The degrees are designed for those who want to work as well as continue with their education.
Typically, they run for three days a week over two years but can take longer if taken part time.
On successful completion of the foundation degree, students can progress to an honours degree or professional qualifications either at the college or a university.
Foundation degrees at Weymouth College include video production, music, music technology, actor training for theatre and media performance, graphic design and multi-media, architectural stonework, public services, early years and business.
Foundation degrees are a higher education qualification and cost the same as any degree level course.
Students can apply for funding via their local education authority.
Many students are eligible for a grant to help them with living costs and additional financial support is available for those with special circumstances.
In terms of entry requirements some of the courses require applicants to have such qualifications as A-levels or a BTEC national diploma.
The college says it is always interested to hear from those without traditional qualifications but who possess relevant practical skills. The college also has Access to Higher Education courses to prepare and qualify students for moving on to degree programmes, which are also delivered full-time and part-time.
Those who can't attend the open day can contact Roz Osborne for an information pack on 01305 764733 or email: roz_osborne@weymouth.ac.uk
