Silver salver for long-serving head
LONG SERVICE: Headmaster Dr Iain Melvin, Old Hardyeans president Professor Hugh Griffiths, guest speaker the Rev Phillip Hewett and Colin Lucas
LONG SERVICE: Headmaster Dr Iain Melvin, Old Hardyeans president Professor Hugh Griffiths, guest speaker the Rev Phillip Hewett and Colin Lucas

HEADTEACHER Iain Melvin was presented with a silver salver in recognition of his long service at the Thomas Hardye School in Dorchester.

He received the keepsake for his 20 years at the school from members of the Old Hardyeans at their annual dinner.

Dr Melvin was due to step down from the helm of the school but has delayed his departure by a year after governors had difficulties finding a replacement.

The Old Hardyeans originally intended the salver to mark his retirement from the school but instead presented it to mark his long service.

Dr Melvin joked at the dinner that rumours of his leaving had been much exaggerated.

The presentation was made by Old Hardyeans president Professor Hugh Griffiths, principal of the Defence College of Management and Technology at Shrivenham.

The guest speaker was Old Hardyean the Rev Phillip Hewett, who was visiting the county town from his home in Canada and standing in for the scheduled speaker Colin Churchill, who was unwell.
