Cooking up a way to new horizons

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS: Karena Evans, Charlie Look and Holly Narraway-Syme with their Food Safety certificates.

STUDENTS Charlie Look and Karena Evans from Weymouth have been cooking up a storm thanks to their apprenticeship with Paragon Skills for Industry.

Charlie and Karena, both 16, have achieved a Level 1 NVQ in Food Preparation and Cooking, while studying at The Compass.

The Compass is a learning centre which provides education in Weymouth and Portland for young people who have found it difficult to stay in mainstream schools.

The course provides the students with an introduction to catering and food preparation.

Charlie has been studying at The Compass for more than three years and has found the course useful in brushing up his cookery skills.

He said: "Before this course I had done some cooking at home, but this course has taught me about food preparation, food hygiene and how to cook properly.

"I have also been able to gain a qualification."

Karena Evans has been a student at Compass for nearly three years and hopes to join the Royal Navy as a chef.

She said: "I joined this course because I enjoy cooking and I now know a lot more about food preparation and cooking.

"My course will continue for another year when I will progress to Level 2 Catering."

Charlie and Karena were joined on their course by 16-year-old Holly Narraway-Syme, who has discovered a flair for cookery and is keen to continue in catering by pursuing a catering apprenticeship.

Compass manager Allan Wood said: "Our link with Paragon Skills provides the students with an opportunity to gain a recognised qualification outside of the normal school environment.

"The young people are given trust in an adult environment and most respond in a positive way to this, their first step into the world of work.

"The young people who have graduated this year came from different backgrounds, had different needs and different aspirations, but have all responded in a positive way and achieved much more than just a qualification. They've achieved self respect, self esteem and a huge sense of achievement."

Paragon Skills has more than 1,300 apprentices currently on training programmes. Further information about hospitality and catering apprenticeships and funding opportunities can be found at www.paragonskills.co.uk or by calling 0800 783 2545.
