GOOD WITH WOOD: Finalist Simon Sibley looks on as Nick Harris shakes hands with Ben Fogle at the awards ceremony

WEYMOUTH College student Simon Sibley has been recognised as among the best in the region after being short-listed as a finalist in the Learning and Skills Council South West Skills Awards 2008.

The awards ceremony took place at Sandy Park Stadium, Exeter.

TV personality Ben Fogle was the speaker at the event when winners from the South West region were announced.

Simon, who is a carpenter with Nick Harris Carpentry, was shortlisted in the Achieving Skills for Life category.

After completing construction qualifications at Weymouth College, Simon opted to continue his learning through an apprenticeship in carpentry.

Simon proved to the judges that he was a worthy finalist through his determination to achieve his qualifications and was highly commended in the category of Skills Learner Of The Year in the final competition.

Simon said: "I'm so happy to have been shortlisted for the skills awards and honoured that I was highly commended in the category. I have found the apprenticeship challenging at times but eventually achieved my goals thanks to the support of my tutors and Nick Harris Carpentry."

Cathy Porter, who is the work-based learning manager at Weymouth College, hailed Simon's achievement.

She said: "We are absolutely thrilled that Simon received such recognition for all his hard work and dedication.

"Simon has made a significant effort to fully achieve his apprenticeship.

"His employer, Nick Harris, has given him tremendous support throughout his training and this type of partnership between employer, college and learner is what the apprenticeship programme is all about."
