IT’S all in the name as Weymouth student Alistair Mason, right, scoops gold in a stonemasonry contest.

The talented student from Weymouth College won Gold in the Advanced Stonemasonry category of the WorldSkills UK competition, which took place last month at the NEC in Birmingham. This ranks Alistair as the best young stonemason in the UK.

Fellow Weymouth College student Jordan Vincent’s work was highly commended in the same category. Alastair hopes to go on to represent the UK in stonemasonry at World Skills Sao Paulo 2015.

College Vice-Principal Rob Jones said: “We are incredibly proud of Alistair’s success and the efforts of the stonemasonry department, which has rightly earned a reputation as one of the very best in the world.

“It’s very satisfying to see Weymouth and Portland leading the way for stonemasonry in the UK.”
