THE BUDMOUTH maths faculty hosted its annual Primary Maths Challenge.

Local primary schools attended each bringing a team of six budding mathematicians selected from their senior students.

Schools attending this year included the reigning champions Chickerell as well as Wyke Regis, Conifers, St Augustine’s, Beechcroft and St Andrew’s.

Students faced a variety of challenges ranging from estimating volumes and lengths to rearranging numbers at speed.

The youngsters had to work together and thought logically to overcome a series of challenging problems.

St Andrew’s won by a whisker, closely followed by Wyke Regis in second and St Augustine's in third place.

Organiser Amy Harris said: “The students had a wonderful morning and many commented on how much they enjoyed the estimation round – questions including how many pound coins would fit into a given box.”

The Budmouth maths faculty was impressed by the way in which the teams approached the problems logically and searched for solutions.

Principal David Akers said: “The Annual Budmouth Maths Challenge is always a wonderful event and the Year 6 students from the local primary schools, displayed their mathematical prowess.

“It was a privilege to witness their enthusiasm and subject knowledge alongside a real competitive edge.

“We look forward to hosting the event again next year.”
