MORE THAN 40 Wey Valley students visited New York and Washington recently as part of an educational and sightseeing tour with the aim of providing students with an opportunity to enhance their experience of different cultures.

The schedule for the trip was a busy one with students visiting Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Memorial, Grand Central Station, the Empire State building, Central Park, Times Square and 5th Avenue.

While in the historic city of Washington DC, students learned about the history of early America.

Visits included the Lincoln Memorial, the Mall, Arlington, the White House, George Town and a variety of museums found at the Smithsonian.

Bella Cash in Year 11 said that her highlights were Times Square at night, a visit to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington and gaining a valuable insight into American culture and history.

Josh Russell added: “The visit to Ground Zero and atmosphere there was moving and really interesting with lots of information on the disaster.”

Jamie Dear in Year 10, confirmed the real ‘buzz’ and excitement around Times Square and the profound reality and effects of the 9 /11 memorial.

Marnie McCoombe recalled the fantastic boat trip to Ellis Island and passing the Statue of Liberty. Rob Deadman also commented on the great views from the top of the Empire State building and said the visit to the 9/11 memorial was ‘very touching and real’.
