PUPILS said ‘aloha’ to sunshine when they were transported to Hawaii for a musical workshop.

Despite gloomy weather outside, grass skirts, colourful shirts and flower leis were the order of the day at Puddletown First School.

They learned a new song and dance routine and had a go at playing instruments, thanks to a generous donation from the Weatherbury Singers.

The choir donated £500 to the school so pupils could have some fun with music.

Judy Cooper, chairman of the Weatherbury Singers, said: “We donated £500 to the school so that pupils could have musical instruments or a musical day.

“The children had a lovely time.”

There was no standing in the corner for Judy or the teachers, as they also joined in with the dances – some even wearing grass skirts. Musician Andy Warn, of The Crotchet Factory, lead the session. Teacher Hayley England, who organised the day, said: “Weatherbury Singers kindly gave us £500 for a musical day.

“So I came up with a list of ideas and presented them to the choir.

“And they came back and said it would be nice to have a musical workshop.

“I'd heard about Andy from another school who said their pupils had had a lot of fun.

“And the children seem to be really enjoying themselves.”

Later in the day, pupils put on a performance for parents of the routines they had learned.

Year Four teacher Sara Stonhill said: “I didn’t expect to be wearing a grass skirt today, but the children are having fun.”
