THE first intake of trainees have been welcomed onto a brand new course designed to promote employment in the rural sector.

The programme is run by the Dorset Studio School with post-16 students spending one day a week in the classroom and three days a week in the workplace of their choice.

This may be veterinary practices, countryside management contractors, ecology and conservation specialists, wildlife reserves, the National Trust, pet retailers and farming organisation.

The first trainees enrolled on November 18 and the qualification aims to provide them with the vital skills needed for employment in the rural sector.

In the classroom they are given the chance to improve GCSE grades in English and Maths by further study and re-taking their exams.

Nationally recognised City and Guilds qualifications in Employability Skills are studied using the fantastic range of land based facilities provided by the Kingston Maurward estate.

Students are then able to put into practice these newly acquired skills during their work experience.

Traineeships are delivered over a period of six months, although the exact length of time may vary, depending on the type of qualification and the individual concerned.

Dorset Studio School is in its third year since opening in September 2014. Students study a strong academic programme of GCSEs together with specialist land based technical qualifications, preparing them for further study into the sixth form, allowing progression to high quality jobs and/or university.

The structure of the school curriculum provides clear links to employability as students work closely with an extensive range of land-based professionals who offer valuable support that includes mentoring, work experience and advice on curriculum development.

In addition to the Traineeships programme, Dorset Studio School is currently recruiting students for new Technical Baccalaureate courses, equivalent to three A Levels that start in September 2017. These specialist land-based programmes of study combine Level 3 Technical Diplomas together with core maths and the extended project study qualifications.

For further information on any of the courses or details on how to apply visit on www.dorsetstudioschool.co.uk or contact the school on 01305 215028.

There will also be an open evening on Thursday, December 1, between 6pm and 7pm where you will have an opportunity to discuss further.
