IT IS 99 years since the start of mobilisation of our troops for the First World War, and the Keep Military Museum – the only military museum for the county regiments of Devon and Dorset – is starting its countdown to the centenary commemorations.

The Keep in Bridport Road in Dorchester won a Heritage Lottery Grant to produce a special First World War project and is calling on the people of Devon and Dorset as well as anyone around the UK who knows of a relative who fought for one of our county regiments to get in touch.

“Time is fast approaching the anniversary of the First World War, which gives the people of Devon and Dorset the opportunity to contact the Keep Military Museum with their stories of ancestors who served at home and abroad during the war from 1914 until 1919,” said curator Colin Parr.

“Do you know what your grandfather, uncle, father or mother was involved in during this period?

“If so, we’d love to hear from you. And we’d like people to spread the message far and wide.”

A team of researchers is working hard, bringing together stories concerning the regiments who were involved, in order that they can be shared with visitors and recorded for future generations.

“The centenary gives us a unique opportunity to engage with the public and especially with schools and young people, in order to make sure that the huge sacrifice of a generation is never forgotten,” added Captain Parr.
