THANKS go to Barry Kerslake of Bournemouth who submitted this photo of Upwey and Broadwey football team taken in the late 1950s, possibly 1957.
The team was sponsored by Weymouth coal merchant Norman Restorick and the players included Don Groves, Bill Shepherd and Tommy Pitman.
Mr Kerslake would love to hear from anyone who remembers the team – and we would too!
Regular contributor Bill Macey also contacted us with the second photo, below, and asked for details.
He says he doesn’t know when it was taken or who the team members are, although he thinks the chap in the middle row, third from left was Dickie Borthwick and that the decorative headgear in the middle on the left may suggest it was a Christmas game.
Bill adds: “Just look at those football boots! Today’s footwear resembles that of the ballet school – no, this was definitely the era of books stuffed down socks for shin guards.”
Can anyone help with this photo?
