IT’s time to take another trip down memory lane and take a look at Dorset’s more recent past.

Most of us think of Darren Campbell as an Olympic sprinter, who won gold at the Athens Olympics as part of the 4x100m relay team and silver at the Sydney Olympics in the 200m.

He also possesses Commonwealth, European and World Championship medals.

But few people are aware that Darren was once a footballer playing for none other than Weymouth FC.

Manchester-born Darren appeared 27 times for the Terras between 1995 and 1996 and scored four goals before deciding his future lay in athletics.

He scored against Bridport, Westburn Canadians, Bashley and Poole Town.

He had represented Weymouth at Wembley where he showed his speed in a competition to find the fastest footballer in the non-league game. Darren easily won and took away the prize of £600 whilst wearing Weymouth kit.

He is currently the sprint coach at Cardiff City FC where he works with players to improve their sprinting ability.

Darren also regularly visits schools to promote sports among children on behalf of the Youth Sport Trust and visited All Saints School in Weymouth and Royal Manor College on Portland in 2009.
