THANKS to Mick Muncaster who pointed out that last week’s photo in Looking Back of Fleet School in 1914 also featured in Chickerell’s magazine.
It would appear as though some of children from the 100-year-old photo have been named.
The following have been identified by a reader: Back row: Unknown, Flo Read, Sally Vine, Billy Brine, Mary Croad, Dorothy Parker, Freda Kinsman, Miss Comben.
Middle row: Vine, Mowlem, Vine, Olive Sampson, Charlie Sampson, Dalley, Bill Bush.
Front row: Jack Cole, unknown, Gert Read, unknown, Lill Rashley, Rose Fowler, Dorothy Ayles, Perc Howell.
Seated on the ground: Unknown, Westgarth, Vic Ayles, Bob Mowlem.
It is thought that the unknowns could be children from the local coastguard cottages, who came and went at Fleet School during this time.
Richie and Saira Sawtell, of Fleet, whose cottage in Fleet is built on the site of the school house, were lent the photo.
Hopefully this has helped clear up some of the mystery of the Class of 1914.
