WE’VE always got more time and space for memories of the Sidney Hall in Weymouth.

Thanks to Mr B.D. O’Grady, of Mount Plesant Avenue South, Weymouth, who has shared some memories of happy times going to watch family shows at the Sidney Hall.

He said: “One I can remember is Showtime and I think as I was only nine or 10 that it was run by Bernard Delfont.

“I remember as a family we were invited backstage because we used to go quite regularly.

“Also in the small hall at the rear of the main hall, there was in 1960-61 a Saturday night with the Everly Brothers and other groups I can’t recall.

“Perhaps readers can fill me in on some of the others.”

Mr O’Grady is also keen to find out more about a boat in Weymouth he remembers from his childhood.

He said: “I remember at the base of the Nothe Fort leading to the Stone Pier there was a Viking boat tied up for a few days.

“Does anyone recall, or better still have any photos of this boat?”

n THANKS go to Joan Smith of Roundham Gardens, Weymouth, who wanted to remind us that the meetings of the Young Women’s Christian Association were held at the Sidney Hall.

Joan, 82, who was Joan Stroud at the time, is pictured above in the back row third from the left.

She said: “My tie is slightly askew! I don’t remember much about the meetings except that we met once a week and we used to march a lot and play games.

“Doreen Mounce was the march leader. She used to march us all along the seafront.

“We thought we were the cat’s whiskers!”

Joan said that after the Sidney Hall was knocked down the Co-op Hall was used for the association’s meetings.

Does anyone recognise themselves or anyone else in this photo of the Young Women’s Christian Association which was featured in the Echo’s Bygones section in 1985?
