READER Wendy Bere recently shared a photo of the Toller and Kingcombe Home Guard with us.

The photo was of the home gaurd from 1939 to 1944 and Wendy was able to name several of her family members who featured in it.

Thanks to Looking Back reader Ivan Rose of Maiden Newton for getting in touch after reading the article.

He was very interested to spot his father Cyril Rose in the front row first on the left in the photo.

Ivan also wished to inform us that the man directly behind his father in the cavalry uniform is Robin Markby who farmed at Langcombe to the north of Toller Porcorum, beside the Crewkerne road.

Jack Legg, also in the front row, ran the grocery shop and Post Office in Toller, Charlie Woodland and Sid Anning, also in the photo, worked on the Bridport branch railway line. Also in the photo is Oswald (Ozzy) Dunford, who worked at Toller Fratrum for Joe Yeates, who is stood next to him in the photo, Ivan said.

He added that his Cyril also worked for Mr Yeates.

Ivan said not many people know that both Toller Porcorum and Toller Fratrum narrowly escaped bombing on one occasion.

Four bombs were dropped along the valley between the two villages.

He said: "Luckily only one of the four exploded,in a field some way from any dwellings, though

the blast which blew most of the windows in on Toller Fratrum church and cracked some windows in the farm house.

"The fourth and last bomb landed right in Toller Porcorum, actually in the field where the photograph was taken.

"Had that bomb gone off it would have caused utter devastation.

"Luckily it never exploded to the relief of everyone.

"The theory was that the railway line was the target, which so nearly succeeded."

This week we also bring you a photo of an unknown platoon of the Dorset Home Guard that Looking Back reader John Pidgeon was wondering if anyone recognises anyone in the photo and can help him identify the platoon.
