Last month we looked back on some panoramic letter cards of Weymouth in 1906-1913.

The cards captured the attention of Geoffrey Stewksbury, Portland, who was reminded of some family photos taken in the 1920s on Weymouth beach.

“You couldn’t travel far then for holidays, those were hard times.

“I’d never seen one of these pictures before of the huts in Weymouth which is what got me thinking about this photograph after the picture I saw in the paper from 1913.”

The photo is believed to have been taken around 1923 on Weymouth beach of Geoffrey’s sisters and his Aunt Lily enjoying a family day out.

Roxie, now 96, in front, and Gladys, 93, behind, are both still living in Dorset and the photo brings back memories for Geoffrey of Weymouth beach and Auntie Lily.

Geoffrey said: “Auntie Lily, she was good to us you know.

“She was one of mother’s friends and came from Portsmouth for holidays.

“She was the one with the camera, it was hard times for us you see.”

Geoffrey said his sisters went on to support the country in the war.

“During the war they helped make parts for Spitfires and worked in a Naafi.

“I worked over in Weymouth during the war and remember the Americans walking down the beach.”

Do you remember seeing the American troops walking on Weymouth beach or have any memories or pictures?
