READER Phil Dennis wishes to share some lovely old postcards of Portesham.

He has built up a collection of postcards of the village which is near Weymouth because he married a 'Portesham girl.'

Phil is hoping that some readers might be able to identify some of the people in the postcards, which we will be featuring in Looking Back over a few weeks.

Using the book Under Black Down The Story of Portesham, a Dorset Village, Phil has tried to find out as much about the images as possible.

Phil tells us: "My wife was born in a property on the corner of Front Street and Winter's Lane which was at one time a village shop.

"Her family were lime burners and her grandfather was a carrier and net supplies agent.

"The post office was originally at Blagdon House opposite the church but in 1890 moved to Clovelly opposite opposite the Half Moon pub, in later years in moved again further down the street.

"Portesham House, which faces you as you come in from Weymouth, was the home of Admiral Hardy, captain of Nelson's ship HMS Victory."

In the photo here of three people we can see the grandfather of Phil's wife and in the second photo we can see three men and a child outside the Fountain Inn in the village. Does anyone know when it was taken or who the people could be?

Some of the people in the postcards could be Phil late wife's relatives, he said.

"Unfortunately there is no-one left I know who can tell me, I appear to be the last of my generation of both families left."
