THANKS to Helen Doble for the following information about Gill Evans' picture of the Burton scout hut:

The location of the photo was at Norburton Hall, Burton Bradstock home of the Knightsmith family, who permitted the Bride Valley Cubs and 1st Burton Bradstock Brownies to use it.

Felicity and Sylvia ran the Bride Valley Cubs from at least the mid 1970s initially at Norburton Hall.

This was the official opening of the hut in the grounds of Norburton Hall on the 1st November 1980.

The scout group raised £4000 by fundraising for the refurbishment of a hut donated by Michael Fowler.

During the ceremony which was attended by 140 youngsters, parents and supporters the hut was dedicated by Rev Toby Salisbury.

Also during the occasion a presentation was made to Martin Evans who retired as district scout chairman.

Penny Laurence took over as the cub scout leader. Sir Joseph Weld was the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset between 1974-1984.

Bride Valley Scout Group were given permission to put up an extension to the hut in 1988.

The Knightsmith family siblings Felicity, Sylvia and Nicholas, none of whom married sold Norburton Hall in 1994 and retired to Dorchester. Felicity died in 2007, Sylvia in 2004 and Nicholas in 2006.

Mrs Ackerman does say the Symondsbury Scout Hut fell into disrepair when the WI used it. Jack Shorts wife was called Bea.

The hut was still in existence in 2011, until it was sold by the new owners of Norburton Hall as a building plot. There must be many residents of Burton who remember the hut on the Shipton Lane road.

My sister Pauline Bailey nee Crabb was the brownie guider at Burton Bradstock during this time in the 1980s and she has provided much of this information.

Gill Evans also contacted us again about her picture.

She said: "You may have had quite enough on the Symondsbury Scout Hut but in case not...

"I’ve been speaking to Charles and Pippa Davis who keep the West Dorset Scout archives and we think that the man on the right is Don Bell who was District Commissioner. It is not Jack Short, though I think he was at one time District Commissioner. His wife was called Bea.

"I can’t believe that this is already history – it seems such a short time ago."
