AL MOLO have stepped back in time this month to recreate a photograph from the summer of 1968.

Giuseppe Vannucci and Tim Newton owners of Al Molo, Weymouth’s Italian fine dining restaurant in the historic, art deco Pier Bandstand, scoured social media to try and track down the people in the photo we previously featured in Looking Back.

They found Trish Kelly from the original photograph at Pullingers and she joined Giuseppe and Tim to recreate the scene alongside Elisa Pittaluga and Iwona Glebowska who assumed the positions of Valerie Wattling and Meg from the original photo.

Unfortunately, they were unable to trace Meg. The chef in the original photograph was Keith Preston and Giuseppe stood in his place.

Valerie Wattling was away on holiday when the photograph was taken.

After a lunch Trish and Tim poured over old photographs and reminisced about the past.

Tim Newton said: “The day was incredibly special, spending time with Trish looking over old photographs and reminiscing about the past.

“It’s funny how our ethos of running Al Molo like a big family is exactly the same to how Pullingers was run back then.”

The story started when Giuseppe and Tim were handed a colour photograph of a old advert for Pullingers.

The silver service restaurant in the Pier Bandstand was famous for its rib of beef and high level of service and was owned by Dennis and Mary Pullinger, running from the late 1940’s until the mid 1970s.

After her day at Al Molo, Trish Kelly said: “Recreating this photograph with Giuseppe and Tim has been so special.

“I have had a lovely lunch, got to reminisce about the past and seen some amazing old photographs.”

“This building and Pullingers will always have a special place in my heart.

“The picture was taken in 1968 and I was the blonde waitress on the left of the original photo.

“I was truly honoured to have worked for Dennis and his lovely wife Mary.

“Pullingers was a prestigious venue, there was no other restaurant in Weymouth or surrounding areas as far as I know like it.

“The food was prepared and cooked by excellent chefs. I know because after service each day we were given the same food. The staff were always looked-after like that.

“I was just a newbie in those days but I learnt an awful lot and made great friends whom will always be with me because we were all a team who enjoyed working together and we had great respect – not only for our diners but also for each other and, importantly too; the Pullinger family, our employers.”
