GET your hat on for a trip down memory lane to the 'wedding of the year' in Weymouth on Tuesday June 11 1907.

Hilda Templeman, daughter of Alderman Thomas John Templeman, married Stanley Redhead of Westow, South Shields, at St John's Church in Weymouth.

The Templemans lived at Stanton Court on the Esplanade and this photo shows the wedding guests leaving the church and going towards Stanton Court. Hilda had served as her father's mayoress in 1897/8 and also for the two and a half years prior to her wedding.

The wedding merited four columns in the Southern Times, giving accounts of the service, the dresses of the bride and her six bridesmaids, the flowers, the guests and the presents.

The weather during the day of the wedding was fine was fine but it rained heavily in the evening which meant that the Alexandra Gardens could not be illuminated in honour of the event as it had been arranged.

The wedding was photographed by Edwin Seward and was printed as a postcard. Seward's postcard shows the fashions of the time well, especially the hats that were commented upon in the papers as being full of ruches of roses and feathers!

Thanks to postcard collector Andy Hutchings for lending us a copy of this image. Andy said it is noteworthy that the postcard was posted on June 14, showing how topical Seward's postcards were.
