THANKS to Betty Hennessy for getting in touch with Looking Back about her memories of the French soldiers in Weymouth during the Second World War.

Betty, 87, nee Scott, recalls getting very emotional when the French soldiers - who were evacuated to Weymouth from Dunkirk - had to leave.

She said: "My father and mother had two staying in our house (not sure for how long). We lived in Chapel Lane at Upwey at the time, I was sent to stay with my grandmother whilst they were there.

"When they left they gave me a brooch and something to my eldest brother.

"We cried when they left as we knew they were off to war."

Betty, of Preston, Weymouth, said Weymouth College was used as a hospital for a while - her brother was admitted there when he fell off his bike. Betty visited him when he was there.

She remembers having to black out the windows of the house due to the threat of air raids when she was about 10-years-old.

"I remember seeing the bomb coming from the German plane that bombed the bus station when we were on our way home from Central School at Westham.

"I am now almost 88-years-old with lots of memories from the past."

These are wonderful memories. Thanks so much to Betty for sharing.
