TODAY’S Looking Back must be one of the farthest-flung requests we have ever had.

James Gardner has been in touch from Auckland in New Zealand, with a request for some more information about synthesiser factories in Wareham in the 1970s.

We first put a request in the pages of Looking Back in December 2015 to try and help him get more information on the electronics company. Mr Gardner said that following that request someone did get in touch.

He has now found a bit more information about EMS activity in Wareham.

He said: “The first manufacturing was in premises at 1, Westminster Road. The company that did the manufacturing was first called EMS (Bournemouth) Ltd and later Hilton Electronics (Wareham) Ltd.

“The metalwork was done by Wheatley Metals, and some of the wooden cases were by Full Range designs, both also in Wareham.

“Hilton Electronics later moved to a larger factory in Johns Road, Wareham.”

He said he wanted to find out if anyone remembered the factories or had any anecdotes about working there.

Mr Gardner added: “A small feature about the factory did appear in the Dorset Evening Echo, probably in about January or February 1973, with photos taken by one Arthur Grant.

“I attach the only (undated) clipping I have.”
