A COUPLE of weeks ago when we were reporting events from the very first edition of the Dorset Echo, we mentioned the death of Robert Whitworth Hughes, which was in the news on May 28 1921.

Mr Hughes was a well known townsman in Dorchester and died aged 67, leaving a widow, two daughters and a son.

He lived in High West Street and was a part of the Dorchester Baptist Church community and in addition to being a deacon, was also church secretary.

It was a pleasure to hear from Richard Baker, who has provided us with a few additional facts from the Dorford (now Dorchester) Baptist Church’s Church Roll, which goes back to 1830.

Richard tells us: “Robert Hughes and his wife - Mrs A. Mary Hughes - both became Church Members on March 6 1904. As your article says, he died in May 1921. Mrs Hughes continued as a member until she was transferred to the Associates Roll in 1930 upon leaving for Cromer, where she lived in Kingston House. The date of her death is not recorded.”

Richard kindly informed us that he would be adding the Echo article to church archives.
