TOMORROW, Wednesday July 4, marks US Independence Day.
This year marks the 242nd anniversary of the founding of the United States and honours the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the Founding Fathers on July 4, 1776.
With this date in mind, here's a stirring photo of more recent history as the allied nations of the Second World War.
These African American GIs, training for D-Day, are photographed at Weymouth Harbour in 1944.
The photo was included in an exhibition 1944 We Were Here: African American GIs in Dorset, which toured Dorset
Many African Americans came to Dorset along with their white colleagues to train in the build-up to D-Day on June 6, 1944. Weymouth had a great number of black GIs staying in the area, and they left at least six children behind in the town.
